Both German and French cultures were strongly influenced by the emergence of «chanson réaliste» (realist song) in the 20th century. During interwar years in Berlin, German cabaret songs appeared with artists such as Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. In France, after the Second World War, this movement was represented by numerous artists, including Edith Piaf, Léo Ferré, Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Brel in the cabarets of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris, and then on famous international stages.
